Dr. Mitchell Reiter–A Local Spine Care Specialist with a National Reputation
Dr. Mitchell Reiter is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with fellowship training in spinal surgery who has been in practice in New Jersey managing patients with spinal disorders for more than 20 years. Dr. Reiter remains an Assistant Clinical Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the Rutgers Medical School, where he served as Chief of the division of spine surgery from September of 1998 until leaving for private practice in April of 2008.
Dr. Reiter’s training consisted of attending the accelerated six-year combined B.S./M.D. Honors Program in Medical Education at the University of Miami. He then underwent five years of residency training in Orthopedic Surgery at The University of Miami – Jackson Memorial Hospital followed by a year of fellowship training in spinal surgery at Emory University in Atlanta. Dr. Reiter has been elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, the U.S. national medical honor society and has consistently been named as a New Jersey Top Doctor by New Jersey Monthly Magazine for more than 10 years. Dr. Reiter has published numerous journal articles and book chapters in the field of spine surgery. His research interests include studies on techniques to reduce scar tissue formation that occurs following spinal operations, biologic adjuncts to improve spinal fusion, appropriate use of pain medications for spinal disorders, and the biomechanics of spinal fixation.
Dr. Reiter is active in medical societies at both the state and national levels. He is currently on the board of directors of The North American Spine Society, the world’s largest multispecialty spine society. He is a past President of New Jersey Orthopedic Society. He is Chair of the Coverage Committee and Vice Chair of the Ethics Committee of The North American Spine Society. Dr. Reiter is a review for The Spine Journal. He has served as chair of Atlantic Health System Spine Technology Committee and serves on the system’s Spine Center of Excellent Steering Committee. Dr. Reiter is a Fellow of The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and a member of The American Medical Association for more than 20 years. Dr. Reiter has been recognized for excellence in medical education at The New Jersey Medical School where he has received the “Outstanding Educator Award” from the graduating class of Orthopedic Chief Residents in 2000, 2006, and 2008.
